Strategic Plan
Strategic Plan for the University of Central Florida
The 2002-2007 UCF Strategic Plan: Pathways to Prominence offers a framework for the University
of Central Florida to realize its vision to be the "nation’s leading metropolitan research university
recognized for its intellectual, cultural, technological, and professional contributions and
renowned for its outstanding programs and partnerships."
The metropolitan research mission of the university clearly recognizes metropolitan as
more than location — it is a commitment to the central Florida metropolitan region.
But research means more than metropolitan — it is a commitment to national leadership
and research accomplishments in key areas. Both dimensions are based on an absolute commitment
to student learning at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The five goals addressing
undergraduate education, graduate education and research, international focus, diversity, and
partnerships focus on key areas for achieving the university’s vision.
The twelve Strategic Initiatives developed in this strategic plan represent particular
areas of focus for directing future UCF activity. The strategic initiatives are the foundation
for this strategic plan and characterize the pathways to prominence.
- Enhance UCF’s academic mission
- Serve the Central Florida metropolitan region
- Strengthen UCF’s services and process
Supporting Plans
UCF’s strategic plan is visionary and focuses on identifying breakthrough areas
that will result in major advances for the university. As such, it is not a detailed,
long-range, operational plan for the university that addresses every area of operation.
At the university level, the major strategic-based long range plans include
the Campus Master Plan and
the Enrollment and Degree Plan.
The university’s goals and strategic initiatives provide direction for improving and
expanding the university’s accomplishments. Within this framework, colleges, departments, and
administrative units develop their own strategic plans to support the university goals, but also
to focus on specific issues of interest to the unit. Additionally, some units may use their
strategic plans as long-range operational plans. Rather than being linked, the college and
administrative unit strategic plans are aligned with the university plan.
